Activists Committed To Interrupting Oppression Now
ACTION began in 2006, when a Black mother in Ithaca sued the Ithaca City School District after the district failed to respond to the racial bullying her daughter endured. A group of longtime racial justice advocates gathered to support her, and by the third meeting gave ourselves the name "ACTION" (Activists Committed To Interrupting Oppression Now).
Nearly two decades later, ACTION continues to meet regularly, pushing the district and the wider community to confront racism in all its forms and to build environments where every young person can thrive.
The Kirby Edmonds ACTION Award for Social Justice honors young people who carry this same commitment—those whose courage, clarity, and leadership move our community toward justice, love, and lasting change.
